windows onecare works well, but it only works for 90 days. Lavasoft Ad-Aware is amazing for adware and spyware. If you have comcast internet you can get McAffee for free.

All of those above are free. Besides OneCar which only works for 90 days before the trial period runs out.

I have had problems with Norton and AVG as where I would download them, and when I scanned they found nothing when something was clearly wrong.
