I've gone through many free Anti Virus programs and i want to know which one is the best to sti

Currently im using AntiVir PE Classic. Its working pretty great. It has deleted about 200 trojans in my 1 hr use.

- I've used Windows Live OneCare and i read comments about how its a waste.

-I've used Windows defender and it was kind of a waste.

First of all verify that your internet connection is working correctly, than try again. if that doesn't work then check the settings of the anti virus regarding updates.

i have tried uninstalling many unused programs through CCleaner, which kind of helped increase its speed. i also installed McAfee antivirus, but for some reason, the on-access scan never finishes scanning my computer entirely; it always freezes at a file called Symaddlin.dll (or something similar?). i think the real problem is at startup; it's REALLY slow. it also doesn't start it in safe mode; instead, a flurry of commands (in MSDOS format) bombards my screen. i have a sony vaio with windows XP media center 2005. i'm trying to find a way to clean my computer without installing any more programs; i mean, some of them really help, but i just don't want anything more to attach itself to the laptop's harddrive/memory. i also don't really want to completely reboot the system/erase everything and start over, it's kinda a hassle, but it's my last resort. please help, i'm not much of a computer person D: and i really need to get my computer working ASAP, i have physics and calculus HW due LOL

It sounds bad to me. This is the reason I don't use laptops. I keep my OS (operating system) on one drive and my files on another. That way if I run into a problem I just wipe the drive with the OS and all is well with the world again.

Tenebril's SpyCatcher is legitimate, but it was known for false-positives. Wouldn't be a root-kit risk. But the 2006 version is sure to be outdated.

Well, I have to agree with you, all windows programs eat up tons of memory. I have Ad Aware Personal SE, but paid for it. I found that the freebies are free for a reason, they don't quite measure up. Remember, you get what you pay for or not. Go on the internet and search for anti-spyware, a loonnngg list will appear. 90% will say they are free, but read closely, if you want 100% protection all the time might we suggest our XYZ program, which costs a mere $19.99? whatever version you have doesnt matter at all unless they have its a major release which means if they have released a version 8 then you shuld get it provided they have done some enhancements in it. If its version 7.2 then its a minor version where they bascially just put few minior enhancements and some bug fixes . So in this case its just the BUILD . Both are same versions but of different build which really doesnt matter. You will still get all the updates when you open up avg.

Please review the release notes for the version and if you think there is some critical bug fix then just download it and install it. You wont need to uninstall the existing version.

If you think there are no critical fixes in the new version then just leave it alone. Everything is fine.

Hi,

That's an easy one to fix, open internet explorer, on the right had side click tools.

Down the bottom click internet options.

Then you should see a page with a tab title of general.

In the section marked home page you will see an internet address, probably the one you do not want.

Delete that one and put in your normal home page that you want to use.

Once you have done that click on apply, on the bottom right, then click ok.

Then close and restart explorer and it should be back to normal.

You need to get SP2. If your XP is genuine, Microsoft will mail you a CD, which I preferred to trying to download it where I wouldn't have a disk to fall back on if something went wrong. The current software is keyed to SP2.

What happens when it expires is the updates stop downloading and updating the software. Usually the software still will scan and take out viruses,but you may have to do it manually and delete them yourself and it may not notify you if you have a virus or not unless you have the subscription.

It could well be that those sites are blocked by your administrator. I agree, get Firefox, it's safer (and faster). A good AV programme is AVG. You can get the free version from their website.

Did you just update IE? Some firewalls mess IE7 up when you put in certain updates.
Could be the pop up blocker stopping the sites from opening (yahoo toolbar and google both have built in pop up blockers). But for free anti virus try AVG.

hi,,im using win 98,,today i was removing my free edition of avg antivirus free edition and installing activeshield antivirus,because

avg antivirus is stopping it's free service from jan 15th,,the activeshield antivirus refused to install unless

avg was uninstalled,,so while the computer was online i uninstalled avg successfully,,,,this might have given chance

My computer has been crazy lately. Ridiculously slow, streaming video abruptly ends, freezing etc. I ran my Symantec antivirus and while I already have 3 trojans in quarantine, it can't find any new threats. I also ran Spybot S%26D and AdAware for spyware; they found a lot and I deleted them all but my computer's still crap.

I can get Norton antivirus free through rogers, so I decided to install it to see if Symantec missed one, but apparently you can only have one antivirus at a time and Norton would make me uninstall symantec, spybot and adaware. I don't really want to do that.

Basically, is it worth uninstalling all that to see if there really is a virus that Symantec missed? Or is there something else that's slowly killing my computer?

Yes it is, this is not to put someone down, but according to many. Norton/Symantec is not that powerful enough to free your computer from various malicious threat. I strongly recommend kaspersky or bitdefender to run on your computer.

Open you windows file and check on the security status of your MS firewall. Set it to the desired protection level. That is free.

Go to CNET.com. In the lower left find the download area and open it. You'll find numerous pay and free programs for download. Add to your AVG another complimentary program called Antiviras AntiVir. It cleans what AVG can not!! It is free and like AVG can update daily and run at set times.

While your on the site consider adding Adaware, SpyBot, and CCleaner. you run them manually and they are easy removal tools for spyware and malware. My NOD 32 antivirus did not detect that virus when i jacked in my friend's Pen Drive. This is the only attack which it has not detected. I don't understand why running your antivirus software in Safe Mode didn't remove it - but then again, I don't know anything about NOD32. I don't think the free AVG is all encompassing. I have Norton.

I wish you would take the time to go into Safe Mode once again and run all antivirus and antispyware. You can also download Ad-aware and Spybot.

Need help. I downloaded node 32 antivirus free trial version. It detected some executable files and it deleted the files. AVG is the best free virus protection going. dont bother with Avast.
If your AVG antivirus was unable to clean the viruses and they are in the Vault, then I recommend that you to go add/remove and remove AVG antivirus from your system.

None of the security programs you are using have a particularly large memory footprint. I suspect your resources are being consumed by other programs on the machine.

The easiest way to increase performance without adding additional RAM, is to disable unnecessary services and startup entries. You can manually do this using msconfig, but a better way to do it using Autoruns from Sysinternals (free);

It is safe to disable anything non-microsoft, leave your AVG.

This will not remove the entries listed here, it will only prevent them from automatically launching when Windows boots, freeing RAM.

There are no significant differences between 10 and 11. However, if you don't need WMP's library functionality, I would suggest using Media Player Classic, which is a lot leaner and will really help with the little RAM you have.

As an anti-virus solution, I think Antivir (you probably mean Avira) is better. It's also leaner than Avast. Do not install an additional firewall (it requires memory), XP already has one built-in.

If you can, upgrade to at least 512 MBs of RAM, this will really speed up your computer if you use memory-intensive stuff. Your processor is quite good.

I have downloaded Spybot S%26D, Ad Aware SE, AVG AntiVirus Free Edition, plus I started with e-trust Innoculate IT. Is there anything else I can do that is free? Try to check your AVG settings, and disable stuff like scans during startup.

If you want to shell out some money to make it run faster you would probably need to upgrade your comp by getting some more RAM, maybe a new video card, or a external hard drive.

A Recommended External Hard Drive would be a Western Digital My Book. All you need is to plug it into your wall and the plug the USB into your Computer.

Run AVG again and see if it got rid of the nasty. If it didn't, run it again in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode:

1.Log out and reboot your machine.

2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3.Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.

4.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. You may have to log in as Administrator to delete the bad files. Administrator often has no password.

5.When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

If it did get rid of the bad guy, the following may help the shutdown problem (I'm assuming Windows XP).:

1.Right-click on the desktop and select Properties from the popup menu.

2.Select the Screen Saver tab.

3.Click the button labeled Power.

Try a registry cleaner. This will kill the programs that want to autaomtaclly startup on power on. Like AIM which will pop-up when the computer turns on.
Simply back-up all your stuff and format your machine especially if that is a laptop. I bet you can try everything that has been suggested and i can assure you that it wont solve your problem. I encountered the same problem a few years ago and i tried this and that and the only thing that solved it was FORMATTING MY COMPUTER. Thereafter I was very careful about programs I installed and I hv never encountered the same problem again. Try all the suggestions you have been given, research books, etc and if that fails implement my advice and if it works please send me my $20 as you have promised.

How to remove pc cillin from my program list?

Once i installed pc cillin internet security 2007 then afterwards i reinstalled it. it was really hard to do that. anyway, i can still see the Trend Micro folder in my program list which possess lots of memory. after being deleted every single things related pc cillin from the regestry(manually) i have found this folder. now whenever i try to delete this folder i can't. it's weird problem. i don't want any unnecessary folder to keep in my program list. sould some1 help me to sort this prob out. i m using vsta ultimate and avg antivirus free edition. thank u. one more thing, i use ccleaner. when i go to its tools option i can still see Trend micro internet security in uninstall folder. there i try to uninstall it and says exe file is missing. but i don't want to install it again to uninstall this weird thing. is there any way just to delete that folder from program list?

If you don't have those 3 things already, then yes you should get them. However, there is at least a free version of anti-spyware called Ad-Aware (I think Ad-Aware 2007 is the latest version) that you can get from http://www.lavasoftusa.com .

The thing I like about AVG Free is that it is not a resource hog like McAfee or Norton and it works pretty well (with the occasionaly false positive). If the full version is just as ''lightweight'' then it may be a good purchase (I've never ponied up the cash myself).

Unfortunately I have no recommendations for Anti-spam or personal firewall.

I just got a 2 year retail boxed AVG Internet Security 7.5 on Ebay for $30 delivered. Of course its better. If it wasn't nobody would be buying or recommending it. I love it when people eat up system resouces running 4 different security programs ''because they're free!''
I'm using F-Secure which would cost me a whole lot of money if I didn't have it for free. I guess the biggest thing you get from paying for virus protection is know that if there is a problem you get support right away over the phone. You don't get that with free spyware blasters. Also there is that saying ''You get what you pay for'' but I've used both free and I just got F-Secure and if I didn't have it for free I probably wouldn't be paying for it. Only if your computer is on a network would you need to pay for something like that.
I use AVG Free for anti-virus and Adaware for spyware/adware, and MailWasher for spam, all are free...and havent had any problems. XP has a built in firewall.
I don't really know, because I haven't tried AVG, but I will say that McAfee ain't what it used to be, if it ever was, and ever since Symantec bought Peter Norton's name and used it without his expertise, NAV's been crapware. I inherited a laptop and a desktop, both with expired NAV on them, from the project I worked on from 1998 to 2002. In 2007, I suddenly found that NAV was becoming more aware, even if it was whining that it couldn't do anything about the malware it was finding. (Is that pitiful or what?!)

Anyway, to make a long story short, either the malware or a glitch in the CMOS had set my system clock back to 2002, and apparently this told NAV to do an update on my ''unexpired'' subscription! By reading what NAV was whining about being unable to fix, I was able to use MKS (a Korn shell on top of Windows to supply all the useful UNIX tools Microsoft was too retarded to think of) to ps -ef and kill -9, etc.
I guess yes, I like their anti-virus program. However, download the trail version to make sure the spyware, etc, doesn't conflict with other programs on your computer first.
